Mama Louise Stratenmakerij
Placemaking specialists

Amsterdam, 2012 - present

Mama Louise is specialised in placemaking. As a concept developer, facilitator, curator and energy maker, it is our strength to think in terms of possibilities, to turn the problem into something new and to revise the current dynamic. With our approach and methodology we create a revitalised energy and a spark in vacant buildings, shopping streets and places that have lost their soul.

Mama Louise has experience in setting up places in shopping streets that provide a new dynamic. Examples are:

de Stratenmakerij • tracking talent and creating a spin-off for vacancy of the street

de Wisselwinkel • kickstarter for new shop entrepreneurs

de Toko • living room restaurant with local chefs

de Grote Wisseltruck • kickstarter for new food truck entrepreneurs

Mama Louise detects talent and entrepreneurship, adds creative value and ensures media reach. This creates a special place in the street, which also functions as a flywheel for other vacant buildings. There is process-oriented and very close cooperation with its local parties and local entrepreneurs.

"We love you doing what you love! – Jane Jacobs".

Mira ter Braak is co-founder of the Mama Louise Foundation. She applies her experiences and knowledge from Buro Mos as art director and concept developer. For example, in cooperation with the parties involved, every concept, project or store is carefully considered and advised on the visual and spatial experience. This input is used to develop a spatial design for the entire area, the physical location or store. Parallel to these processes, we work together with branding experts on an identity, so that a customized branding is developed in line with the story and experience.

"Our motivation to start Mama Louise came from the joy we felt in helping people realize their dreams. Recovering their self-esteem and trust that creates a sparkle in their eyes".

Wisselwinkel Rahtour
Bicycle repairman Rathu Gunawardana

Amsterdam-Noord 2013

The first entrepreneur in the Wisselwinkel was bicycle repairman Rathu Gunawardana; from his garden in the Van der Pekbuurt he repaired bicycles from neighbors and friends. In February 2013, he seized the opportunity to turn his passion into his work. And opened the bicycle shop Rahtour, where Rathu also sold refurbished bicycles in addition to the bicycle shop and made customized advice about equipment for cycling trips. The pilot period in the Wisselwinkel proved to be a huge success: so much so that Rathu was able to move into a larger building in Van der Pekstraat at the end of August 2013 in order to continue his business on a larger scale.

Pekmarkt
'Pek op Noord' local goods and ware market

Amsterdam 2013

Buro Mos : art direction and advice in both branding and physical appearance.

The Mosplein goods and ware market, has been a well known name in Amsterdam-Noord and the surrounding area since 1920,  since September 2013 the goods and ware market has been moved to Van Der Pekstraat. All the familiar faces of the market have moved with them and space has been created for new local market entrepreneurs with surprising additional products.

The market families who have been in the business for more than 40 years sometimes inspire young entrepreneurs; how proud, authentic, diligent, noisy, stubborn, big and persistent they can be. Young market entrepreneurs, on the other hand, surprise skilled market entrepreneurs with their ingenuity, new perspectives, dreams and boldness. Together we make the Pekmarkt.

Nowadays you can do your daily shopping at the Pekmarkt or shop for special gifts and culinary surprises. The Pekmarkt is a stage for crafts, good bargains, special skills and products with a story. A bustling market to roam about and above all a meeting place for neighbors, friends, Amsterdammers and citizens of the world.

de Modestraat
Creative neighborhood hub at Nieuwendam-Noord

Amsterdam 2011

The Modestraat is a creative hub where designers and cultural entrepreneurs work on creative projects inspired by and together with the neighborhood.

This is done on the basis of the theme `fashion’  in the broadest sense of the word. The Modestraat housed itself from the beginning of 2011 in a vacant retail building in Amsterdam Nieuwendam-Noord. A location in the middle of a ‘under construction ‘ shopping mall and a neighborhood in full development. Besides the renewed neighborhood mix of current residents with new residents, even the name of the area changed from ‘Nieuwendam’ to now called Waterlandpleinbuurt. An unexpected location where designers and other creative minds have developed numerous initiatives through this theme as a connection method over a period of more than two years. In addition to the regular workshops, a diverse program has been created from monthly events, one-off projects to multidisciplinary festivities. This not only makes the Modestraat a symbol of a meeting place with various possibilities, but also gives impetus to local entrepreneurship and talent development in the neighborhood.

"Mira ter Braak was founder and art director of ‘de Modestraat’. She initiated this artist initiative in the North of Amsterdam, she curated and encouraged the creative hub, where cultural entrepreneurs, local start-ups and neighbourhood residents rent workspaces, inspire each other and work together on creative projects."

de Modestraat
Creative neighborhood hub at Buikslotermeerplein

Amsterdam 2014

After its first location in the Waterlandplein neighborhood, from the end of 2013 the Modestraat is located in a former Chinese restaurant on the Buikslotermeerplein in Amsterdam Noord. At this location, the creative hub has grown into a committed, creative community that makes people's lives more colorful and helps realize dreams from a special home base. This is done by bringing them into contact with art, culture and creativity and by bringing about special encounters. The Modestraat enters into new connections, often across the boundaries of disciplines and with other social domains. Special stories are made in collaboration with entrepreneurs, volunteers and local residents. And through this approach, the ultimate cross-fertilization between creative breeding ground and a place for the neighborhood has been created.
